Dear Mr. President Biden,
You are someone who experienced the life’s hardest obstacles. Through both your personal life and career, you demonstrated that you are a fighter. Facing two deaths of family members at same time and loss of your son from serving this nation. Life hit you the hardest. You didn’t just get back up. You stand ever stronger and more courageously to choose a career that challenges you everyday to better other people’s lives.
You are someone who is embodiment of decency, wisdom, compassion, dignity, and respect for others. You dedicated your entire life to work for the people. You are so respected on the world stage.
There are so many things that you have done for this country that matters to me as a Tibetan woman who lives in America. I lived in the US under 4 different presidencies. Your administration fully embraced the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. That’s why it is so successful. Your accomplishments are reflections of your values and character. They broke the historical record. You were the first Vice President to the first black President of the United States. You picked the first woman Vice President of the United States. You also nominated the first black woman to the Supreme Court. You made investments in black communities that helps building generational wealth.
The list goes on from defending Affordable Care Act, protecting children and women from violence, forgiving student debts, cutting child poverty in half, making health care more affordable, saving lives by launching National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, building the strongest economy in the world, taking action towards climate resilience, and making Juneteenth federal holiday to remember black history. There are many more accomplishments that you deserve to be credited for.
Extraordinary record of accomplishments within 4 years given that you inherited a broken country. You saved us with your win. We lived through Donal Trump’s presidency. His mismanagement of COVID-19, attacks on reproductive freedom, and his failed foreign policies. As someone who came to this country as an international student, Trump was disastrous to us. He changed the law to restrict student visa to a strict timeframe. Banning students come from certain countries. His rules made it harder to get a student visa. This impacted the Chinese students the most because Chinese students make up a third of international student population. He also came up with rules to interrupt international students’ lives during COVID-19.
Trump’s presidency posed especially harm on our communities. The brutal killing of George Floyd, his assaults against black civil rights, taking away women’s reproductive freedom which impacted the black women the most because majority of black women live in the south. Erasing black history and eliminating Obamacare. Spreading insane lies about COVID-19. Black communities came far away, but systemic racism and racial inequality exist in our society. With a second Trump term and Project 2025 (https://www.project2025.org/) will repeal all the progresses are made.
There is so much resistance towards the people whom we want the leaders to be. Unfortunately, this resistance is based on our bias and stereotype. Spanning between President Barack Obama and you, a historic progress is made. To your credit, you approved America that women can lead and they can be great leaders. But sadly, the other side didn’t view these victories as success for America. They tried to undo everything and take us backwards. Although, you and Vice President Kamala Harris showed us your leadership skills. How the work can be done beautifully and smoothly. These people don’t doubt ones’s ability to do the job as much as they are bothered by the fact the person who would hold the highest position be a woman of color.
I agree democracy is a team work. A team who empowers and stands by each other to bring positive changes. Both President Barack Obama and you showed the world the strength of leader. As Vice President Kamala Harris describes it:
The true measure of leaders’ strength is based on who you lift up, not who you beat down. — Vice President Kamala Harris
No man or no country is an island. Especially, a country like the United States plays an important role in the world. I am also aware of the work that you have done on behalf of America on the world stage. The 2024 NATO Summit, with your effort made NATO stronger and united than ever. We need strong alliance to defend each other against aggression and dictators. Through our history, we know that dictators didn’t cooperate. We need to combine our strength and be prepared to face the next crisis. Yes! It’s good to have friends. Together, we are stronger and better.
There is so much to write about, but I will stop here to deliver the purpose of this letter. I am endorsing you to get reelected. So you can finish the job that you have started. Restore Roe, expand Social Security & Medicare, ban assault weapons, wipe all medical debt, and raise the minimum wage.
Love,
Tashitso Anam
